Pete first walked through the doors of The Samaritan Inn almost one year ago.   He arrived with virtually nothing after relocating from another state and with nowhere else to go, Pete took a chance hoping that a bed would be available for him here at The Inn when he arrived.   When our caseworker sat down with Pete to complete the intake process, we learned that he was seeking to gain custody of his child who had been placed in foster care.   Pete was ready to make changes in order to regain stability for both himself and his son. With his basic needs met and the comfort of knowing he was regaining stability, Pete successfully completed what was required by Child Protective Services and began gaining custody of his child within his first two weeks at The Inn. During this time, Pete built a relationship with the foster family who had become a great source of support and provided a sense of family to both Pete and his son. With his father/son bond strengthening, Pete knew he needed to secure employment. He had been searching diligently but needed a job close in proximity to The Inn given that he had no automobile or transportation. With the help of our career development team Pete found not only a good-paying job nearby, but one that would also allow his son to join him at work if needed. With flexible hours and the option to work as much as he wanted, Pete was able to build his savings quickly. With no outstanding debt and no need to pay for childcare, Pete was well...

Story of the Week – Finding success through process

The Samaritan Inn strongly believes in community and strives to positively impact the lives of homeless individuals throughout North Texas and beyond.  The goal of The Inn is to provide a safe, secure place in which homeless individuals can seek shelter, stabilize from their prior environment, gain dignity and independence, and ultimately become self-sufficient.  Ethan is a primary example of how The Inn assists in the transformation of residents who are willing and able to effectively work the program.   Ethan entered The Inn seeking shelter after a recent divorce and unexpected job loss. His lack of employment and scarce savings impacted his ability to afford housing. Before coming to The Inn, Ethan spent an entire year sleeping on relative’s couches, in hotel rooms, and ultimately residing in his car.  His struggle to find a secure place of shelter would have continued, however, a family member recommended that he contact The Samaritan Inn.  Upon arriving at The Inn, Ethan shared feelings of anxiety and trauma caused by his divorce and lack of financial resources.  Although Ethan had experienced a recent crisis with his failing marriage and job loss, he expressed a strong willingness to work the program, attend classes, and begin to re-establish his independence. Once settled, Ethan immediately took advantage of the resources available to him through our program including case management, job readiness, counseling, and financial literacy.  He has set goals and created a plan to obtain them while meeting with his Case Manager.  He also maintains weekly meetings with his counselor to discuss his feelings regarding his divorce and is learning positive coping skills to treat his...

Story of the Week – New Beginnings

After cutting ties with an abusive boyfriend, 36-year old Sara (a single mom with a teenage daughter) tried to make it on her own but unfortunately, the cost of living in Collin County coupled with the debt accrued during that relationship was more than she could financially handle. Thankfully Sara’s landlord was willing to work with her so she could avoid adding an eviction to her troubles and together she and her daughter set out on a path they had never envisioned for themselves…being homeless. Needing assistance from a homeless shelter was not where Sara thought she’d find herself at this stage of her life. She had earned both an Associates and a Bachelor’s degree and was fully employed with a good company, but after depleting all her resources and she had nowhere else to turn. Sara and her 16-year old daughter arrived on the Inn’s doorstep in early March of this year. Her bravery and persistence to do what was best for her daughter led the way. She determined to meet and complete the program requirements with drive and positivity. Sara met with her caseworker to set goals for herself and her daughter and to lay out plans for their future. In her counseling sessions, she began to recognize not only where she needed help but also where her strengths lie. She excelled in her soft skills and interviewing knowledge and it became quickly evident obtaining and maintaining employment were strengths for Sara, but being paid enough to live in the area would be an area to work on. Although she did not need any further educational opportunities,...
