Story of the Week – Finding success through process

The Samaritan Inn strongly believes in community and strives to positively impact the lives of homeless individuals throughout North Texas and beyond.  The goal of The Inn is to provide a safe, secure place in which homeless individuals can seek shelter, stabilize from their prior environment, gain dignity and independence, and ultimately become self-sufficient.  Ethan is a primary example of how The Inn assists in the transformation of residents who are willing and able to effectively work the program.   Ethan entered The Inn seeking shelter after a recent divorce and unexpected job loss. His lack of employment and scarce savings impacted his ability to afford housing. Before coming to The Inn, Ethan spent an entire year sleeping on relative’s couches, in hotel rooms, and ultimately residing in his car.  His struggle to find a secure place of shelter would have continued, however, a family member recommended that he contact The Samaritan Inn.  Upon arriving at The Inn, Ethan shared feelings of anxiety and trauma caused by his divorce and lack of financial resources.  Although Ethan had experienced a recent crisis with his failing marriage and job loss, he expressed a strong willingness to work the program, attend classes, and begin to re-establish his independence. Once settled, Ethan immediately took advantage of the resources available to him through our program including case management, job readiness, counseling, and financial literacy.  He has set goals and created a plan to obtain them while meeting with his Case Manager.  He also maintains weekly meetings with his counselor to discuss his feelings regarding his divorce and is learning positive coping skills to treat his...

Story of the Week – New Beginnings

After cutting ties with an abusive boyfriend, 36-year old Sara (a single mom with a teenage daughter) tried to make it on her own but unfortunately, the cost of living in Collin County coupled with the debt accrued during that relationship was more than she could financially handle. Thankfully Sara’s landlord was willing to work with her so she could avoid adding an eviction to her troubles and together she and her daughter set out on a path they had never envisioned for themselves…being homeless. Needing assistance from a homeless shelter was not where Sara thought she’d find herself at this stage of her life. She had earned both an Associates and a Bachelor’s degree and was fully employed with a good company, but after depleting all her resources and she had nowhere else to turn. Sara and her 16-year old daughter arrived on the Inn’s doorstep in early March of this year. Her bravery and persistence to do what was best for her daughter led the way. She determined to meet and complete the program requirements with drive and positivity. Sara met with her caseworker to set goals for herself and her daughter and to lay out plans for their future. In her counseling sessions, she began to recognize not only where she needed help but also where her strengths lie. She excelled in her soft skills and interviewing knowledge and it became quickly evident obtaining and maintaining employment were strengths for Sara, but being paid enough to live in the area would be an area to work on. Although she did not need any further educational opportunities,...

Story of the Week – Unexpected Blessings

Andy arrived at The Samaritan Inn in March after the living situation with his brother became difficult and he was unable to afford a place of his own.  For the past five years he had been making a living as a driver, most recently with Uber.  However, Andy found that he didn’t make enough money to sustain himself independently.  In a recent study published by MIT it was determined that the median pretax profit for Uber and Lyft drivers is typically about $3.37 per hour. After moving to The Inn, Andy was able to secure a position at a factory with better pay.  However, even working overtime, he has little left to save after paying child support and transportation to work.  Given the opportunity to talk with Andy, it becomes clear that this quiet and reserved man is deeply rooted in his faith and puts his children’s needs above all else.  As a father of twin boys, Andy provides more than the required child support to ensure that his boys have what they need. After a recent church service, Andy found himself chatting with a fellow member of the congregation and shared a bit about his situation.  That conversation led to an amazing blessing.  In the first 30 minutes of their conversation, this generous church member saw the good, hardworking man that Andy is and offered to give him a car. The vehicle was intended for donation to charity, but in speaking with Andy the man could see what a blessing the vehicle would be for him.  Andy’s caseworker was not surprised and said “Anyone who talks to Andy knows that he has a...

Story of the Week – Rebuilding after a natural disaster

Cullen moved to south Texas from the Midwest in search of better opportunities and found success until mother nature ravaged the area and took everything he had. A car salesman by trade, Cullen worked hard and hoped to bounce back but the market for new automobiles was slow due to the high demand for insurance payments. Unable to get back on his feet, Cullen decided it was time for a change and relocated to the DFW area in late 2017. When he arrived in DFW, Cullen stayed with a friend but the strain of having a house guest proved to be too much and he was asked to leave. Unable to find a job and with nowhere else to turn, Cullen came to the shelter in late January. From the moment Cullen arrived at The Samaritan Inn, he has helped anywhere he saw a need. From completing chores to serving meals, Cullen is eager to lend a hand in addition to completing his assignments and required classes. Cullen found work quickly through a temp agency and has recently secured a position in his field of choice – selling automobiles. Finally, Cullen is feeling more confident and secure now that he has a steady income. A perk of his new position includes the use of a demo vehicle which is allowing him to regain his independence as well. Cullen has completed all of the required classes in our program and feels that the biggest lesson he has learned is to live within his means and not exceed his budget.
